April has always been a big month for our family. We have 3 birthdays within 4 days, often falling on Easter weekend, of course Easter itself, the Masters (you can ready about my Masters Party here), and just springtime festivities in general! April is when I start to come alive again!
When I was growing up and we lived in KY, but all of our family lived in TN, Easter was super special too because it was the one holiday where our whole family came to us as opposed to us traveling to them! I have so many memories of birthday celebrations, Easter celebrations, Easter egg hunts, dying eggs, going to Easter Sunday service together, etc.
But there’s one tradition, that even as I have gotten older, that I’ve never let go of! And this is – Resurrection Rolls! Even when I was in college, engaged, married, not living at home, etc. I ALWAYS made sure resurrection rolls were on the menu for the weekend! But now that I have kids of my own, it’s even more special to carry on that tradition with them!
These are so easy, so meaningful, and require very minimal effort! All you need is a package of refrigerated crescent roll dough, large marshmallows, melted butter, and some cinnamon sugar.
Once you’ve opened your crescent rolls (and hopefully didn’t have a heart attack from the pop) unroll them into their 8 individual triangles. These represent the tomb that Jesus was buried in. Then take your marshmallow, representing Jesus’ body, and roll it in the melted butter and cinnamon sugar – the oil and spices Jesus’ body was prepared in for burial.
Next, wrap the cinnamon coated marshmallows up in the crescent rolls and seal all the cracks tight, creating your “tomb.” Then bake according to the directions on the package!
You’ll soon find that Jesus’ body, i.e. the marshmallow is gone and your tomb is empty!
You’re not only left with a delicious, warm, gooey, cinnamon-y breakfast treat, but also a reminder, and very toddler/child teachable moment, of what we are celebrating at Easter and the power of the empty tomb!
Whether you make resurrection rolls this Easter weekend or not, I hope you have a blessed and beautiful Easter. I hope you can cling to that old rugged cross, and celebrate the HOPE we have in Jesus, our Risen Savior and King!
