“Candles and Cleaners” – I know, I know, you’re probably getting tired of hearing me saying that! (And if you don’t know what I’m referring to, check out this post!) But truly, that’s what I always go back to and how my story begins. I love all things home – and I especially love a cozy home that smells delicious. Hence I used to stock up every Black Friday on all those Bath and Body candles. And while I loved a good candle, the majority of the time I got a headache while burning them.
Honestly, for a while that didn’t even stop me from burning them. But then once I had a baby crawling around the house (insert fire hazard!) I was way more conscious of what I was putting into our indoor air…and let me just tell you, most conventional candles on the market today are full of things not good to be breathing in!
Candles are typically made with harmful waxes, artificial fragrance, harsh chemicals, and endocrine disruptors. Certainly, there are some safer candle options out there…but for the most part, geeze – no wonder I always got headaches!
And that’s just candles. Most other sources of home fragrance are filled with much of the same ick (which if you want some more details on, check out my Toxins blog)…think air fresheners, plug ins, room sprays, fabric sprays – you get the picture. And that my friend, is why I switched to diffusing essential oils. Because I still get the cozy, smell good home, without all the harsh chemicals, icky ingredients, and headaches. Win, win!
And here’s something else cool about diffusing essential oils…have you ever heard that the air inside our homes is more polluted than the outdoors? Well – diffusing essential oils actually helps to purify and clean your indoor air – how cool is that?!
And not only that – essential oils have tons of other benefits too! From emotional support to immune support – how cool is it that instead of burning a candle that is harmful to your health, you can diffuse an essential oil that helps you focus on a task before you…or helps to uplift your emotions…or sleep better at night…or breathe easier when you’re congested…or strengthen your immune system and fight germs.
Pretty darn cool right?? This is why I love diffusing so much and why I’m so passionate about sharing with others! And to think I used to love burning candles that gave me a headache!
Anyway – I could go on and on. But one other thing that is so important in all this is quality. Quality is so so important, and essential oils are not created equally. For starters, there are no regulations – so a bottle of oil that you buy at the grocery store could say “100% pure essential oil” but there is really nothing regulating that. So yes, it may contain some pure oil, but it could also be filled with some other things, including artificial fragrance.
One other thing about quality is that the process of creating an oil matters. If an essential oil is not distilled properly, it can lose its therapeutic benefits. So all that to say – just make sure you trust you oil source! And know that if it’s cheap in price, it very well could be cheap in quality too.
